Zambia’s Second National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP-2) is a 10-year roadmap guiding the country’s efforts to conserve, restore, and sustainably use its rich biodiversity. Developed in alignment with global frameworks like the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, NBSAP-2 reflects Zambia’s commitment to protecting its natural heritage while supporting sustainable development.
🌍 Vision
By 2025, Zambia envisions a future where biodiversity is valued, conserved, restored, and wisely used—ensuring healthy ecosystems and delivering essential benefits to all Zambians.
🎯 Strategic Goals
NBSAP-2 is built around five key goals:
- Mainstream biodiversity across all sectors of government and society.
- Reduce direct pressures on biodiversity and promote sustainable use.
- Safeguard ecosystems, species, and genetic diversity.
- Enhance benefits from biodiversity and ecosystem services.
- Strengthen implementation through planning, knowledge sharing, and capacity building.
📌 Key Highlights
- Covers 18 national biodiversity targets adapted from the global Aichi Targets.
- Emphasizes community participation, traditional knowledge, and equitable benefit-sharing.
- Promotes sustainable agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and energy practices.
- Addresses threats like deforestation, climate change, invasive species, and pollution.
- Introduces a robust monitoring and evaluation framework to track progress.
🤝 Who’s Involved?
The strategy was developed through a highly participatory process involving over 500 stakeholders, including government ministries, civil society, academia, local communities, and international partners.
💡 Why It Matters
With over 40% of Zambia’s land under protection and biodiversity underpinning livelihoods, food security, and economic growth, NBSAP-2 is a vital tool for ensuring a sustainable and resilient future.
